Earthquake

Well, yesterday was certainly interesting. I had just waken up, was actually sitting on the side of the bed thinking about coffee when the world started to roll and rattle. I lived in California for seven years & know “the rules,” but did not even think about going to stand in a doorway (which many experts now say is the wrong thing to do anyway.) I stood up, watched the pictures moving on the walls, felt the unnatural movement of pretty much everything and just kind of marvelled. Then it was over and I walked into the kitchen, started the coffee maker, turned on the TV and selected a local channel as I passed back through the living room, came into my office and turned on the computer. It was still booting up when the big aftershock came and the power failed. I spent most of the day reading (had to open all the drapes since I couldn’t turn on a lamp,) trotting out to the car every couple of hours to catch the news. The power came back after about six and a half hours. By then I had straightened the pictures, put some kaleidoscopes back on their stands and picked up a few fallen books. I was watching the news from The Big Island (things don’t look good over there) when, about an hour later, a neighbor came to advise me that there was a broken water main under the street. I went down to check it out, then called the water board. Had a terrible time getting through as local phone service is messed up. I then went through the neighborhood letting people know that water would have to be turned off & they needed to store some up. I had just finished filling the tub for flush water and filling some pitchers for consumption when the water went off.

So, interesting, not terribly frightening. I was in the Bay Area in ‘89 when the Loma Prieta (aka: World Series) earthquake occurred (anniversary tomorrow.) Hawaii doesn’t hold a candle to California when it comes to earthquakes. That’s my happy thought for today.

It was nice to have water when I got up this morning. I chose not to get naked and step into the shower yesterday, just in case a big aftershock made me want to run outside. ;0)

Sickly

I haven’t been feeling well lately. I have some chronic health problems that make “little things” more bothersome. So I get allergy symptoms after working in the yard or treating the boys for fleas and it takes me forever to get over them. Wears me down to a frazzle. I was starting to perk up, then the trade winds died and it got muggy and sticky. Sinus stuff started happening. I was just finally starting to feel better again and build up a little energy, and now we have vog. Vog is like smog, but with volcanic ash in the mix instead of smoke or indutrial pollutants. It can cause some serious health problems for the very old, the very young, those with respiratory problems and those living with chronic illnesses.

I’m not getting much done around the house. I’m feeling guilty about it, but not terribly motivated to do anything. Mostly I’m just tired.

Progress: none

Are you socially anxious?

Your Social Anxiety Level: 64%

You have high social anxiety.

You have a pretty serious social phobia, and it effects your life more than you may realize.

It’s possible that you’ve made yourself comfortable by avoiding situations you dread.

But don’t be fooled - you still probably need professional help.

A gathering of friends

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t have much of a social life. I’ve had problems with social anxiety disorder since back in the days when it was called agoraphobia. I’m most content when when I’m here in my own home.

Some things are worth going out for, though. I’ve been sharing lunch about once a month with other BookCrossers for over three years. That and my theatre outings are the only things I want to do outside of my home, and pretty much the only things I do do other than work and necessary errands.

We call ourselves The Table of Contents, quite appropriate for group of book lovers, moreso because they are all full of wonderful contents themselves, in intellect and personality. But there’s a little joke there, too, a play on the words. We meet at various restaurants and all of us love the dining experiences as much as books and each others’ company. Our joke is that, once a fine meal is eaten, including a delicious dessert (usually chocolate!) we are the Table of Contents, because we’re such a contented lot.

Progress: One of the things we do at the gatherings is to swap books. I always bring home too many. I met my goal today and brought home less than I started with. Baby steps.

September recap

I haven’t lost my determination to de-clutter my home, but haven’t made a lot of progress. The books are slowly being released to find new readers. I feel good about that, but, again, progress is slow.
