Earthquake
Well, yesterday was certainly interesting. I had just waken up, was actually sitting on the side of the bed thinking about coffee when the world started to roll and rattle. I lived in California for seven years & know “the rules,” but did not even think about going to stand in a doorway (which many experts now say is the wrong thing to do anyway.) I stood up, watched the pictures moving on the walls, felt the unnatural movement of pretty much everything and just kind of marvelled. Then it was over and I walked into the kitchen, started the coffee maker, turned on the TV and selected a local channel as I passed back through the living room, came into my office and turned on the computer. It was still booting up when the big aftershock came and the power failed. I spent most of the day reading (had to open all the drapes since I couldn’t turn on a lamp,) trotting out to the car every couple of hours to catch the news. The power came back after about six and a half hours. By then I had straightened the pictures, put some kaleidoscopes back on their stands and picked up a few fallen books. I was watching the news from The Big Island (things don’t look good over there) when, about an hour later, a neighbor came to advise me that there was a broken water main under the street. I went down to check it out, then called the water board. Had a terrible time getting through as local phone service is messed up. I then went through the neighborhood letting people know that water would have to be turned off & they needed to store some up. I had just finished filling the tub for flush water and filling some pitchers for consumption when the water went off.
So, interesting, not terribly frightening. I was in the Bay Area in ‘89 when the Loma Prieta (aka: World Series) earthquake occurred (anniversary tomorrow.) Hawaii doesn’t hold a candle to California when it comes to earthquakes. That’s my happy thought for today.
It was nice to have water when I got up this morning. I chose not to get naked and step into the shower yesterday, just in case a big aftershock made me want to run outside. ;0)

Being from New England, I never experienced an earthquake til I lived in Japan. Weird that there’s different kinds…up and done, side to side and kind of wavy.

Yep, and this was my first “rolling” earthquake. Hope I never have the opportunity to become an expert on the different types. Mahalo for visiting my blog.
