Reviews and More
Somewhere between the ages of ten and twelve I began to move away from children’s books to more adult literature. I had read my way through all of my Nancy Drew collection and all of the Hardy Boy mysteries my brothers collected. My mother was a mystery fan, so I guess all four of her kids came by our love of the genre naturally. Rex Stout and Agatha Christie were two of my earliest favorites, and I’ve read them both throughout all of the intervening years.
What brought this to mind this evening was a visit to Reviews and More. The author of the site and I seem to have a lot in common. We both have a special love for reference works and language books. J.E. has been revisiting classics that had been unexplored since high school. I’ve been delving into many of them for the first time. We’ve both read a number of the same books just recently: Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, Marley and Me by John Grogan and (finally!) bestseller The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Our opinion of each is remarkably similar. While acknowledging that Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea is an enjoyable story, we both wonder at the lenghts the literary critics have gone to in (over) analyzing it.
It’s Agatha Christie that first drew me into seeing these similarities. J.E. is well on the way to reading or re-reading all of her works, in order. As prolific as Dame Agatha was, it’s a project that could span many years. J.E. recently reviewed The A.B.C. Murders. The comprehensive review has made me realize that I either never read that one, or, more likely, that I’ve completely forgotten it. I’ll be looking for it the next time I go to the library. It’s classic Agatha Chrisite and my appetite has been whetted.
J.E. reviews are not limited to books. There are also find well-thought out reviews of popular TV programs, movies, video games and numerous products and services. I appreciate the honest approach in each of the posts I’ve read so far. Return visits are on my agenda, and I hope some of my readers will follow me over there. It will be time well spent. Fans of Tommy and Tuppence should be supported!
