I've always made the same assumption about Spam in Hawaii - that it was a gift of the military. Like maybe our fighting guys during WWII would have rather starved than eat the stuff, so they gave it away wholesale and folks developed an affinity for it.

I'll have to try it with mustard & see if that makes it a little more appealing to me. Not my favorite condiment, but I love it with smoked sausage and that's related to Spam, right? Mystery meats, ground up with binders and flavor additives, distinctive shape ... yeah, I think they must be second cousins, lol!

Mahalo for dropping by. Come back soon for more amusement and menu suggestions!

I loved this post. I ate a lot of Spam as a kid since we were "poor" and my Mom was a terrible cook :) I must also ashamedly admit that I sort of like the stuff and crave it from time to time. Especially fried with mustard... YUMMY! Also, I lived on Guam for three years while stationed at Anderson AFB on the north end of the island. Spam was huge there as it had been one of the things the U.S. service men had brought to the Guamanian people at the end of WWII and the U.S. government made some sort of agreement to provide Guam with a perpetual supply of the stuff (sort of like the "free cheese" program). Anywho, thanks for the post and for raising my Spam cravings to the surface once more.

"Did you know that Hawaii consumes more Spam per capita than any other state?"

Actually I did know that. Everytime I see Spam I think of what the mock scientist from NPR Dr. Science said Spam stood for when asked. "Scientifically Produced Animal Matter"
