5 Questions

There’s a very interesting meme going around. Unlike most memes, this one requires the participants to read each others blogs and know a little bit about each other. I first became aware of it when Mr. Fabulous, the world’s most rude, crude and uncouth blogger interviewed Lisa. See, Lisa is a lady, and though she doesn’t advertise herself as being very, very proper like someone we both know, I always think of her that way. When I saw the questions I really thought that she would find some of the questions somewhat distasteful and intrusive. But Lisa is no softy and she gave as good as she got. The interview is hilarious, so I’ll wait while you go read it if you like.

You back? Admit it, you peed yourself, too, just like Lisa and I did, right? Okay, go change into something dry, then let’s get this show on the road.

Once Lisa answered her questions she asked who wanted her to interview them. Since it looked like this could be more fun than plucking eyebrows (which is the only serious committment I had on my agenda,) I raised my hand. Must be my lucky day because I got called on! Here are Lisa’s questions to me, and my answers:

1. Would you ever move from Hawaii? Why or why not?

You started with a tough one. I live 2400 from my son, 3900 miles from most of the rest of my family and 4300 miles from the New Orleans area where I grew up. Sometimes I feel very alone out here on this little speck in the ocean and find myself just wanting to leave. But Hawaii has been my home for over a dozen years and, in many ways, I feel more at home here than I’ve ever felt anywhere else. I’m not talking about the paradise aspects of it - that’s the extra bonus. What feels so right to me is the genuinely integrated multi-cultural society, the ease with which so many peoples come together into a homogenous whole. The society is not Hawaiian or Samoan or Asian or any of those others. It’s a unique and comfortable thing called local and feels very, very right to me. Would I ever want to move away? No. Could I, if I had to? Yes, with a sense of loss, I’m sure, but looking forward to whatever the next adventure might be.

2. Why do you like photography?

First I need to acknowledge that I’m not very good at it. I like telling stories inspired by photographs, though, and enjoy finding shots to illustrate the stories that are already in me. My original impetus in putting photos in my blog was the feedback from readers. I didn’t put much thought into what might happen when I uploaded a few of them, but once I published them the comments flew … more, please! … give us more! Let’s face it, I’m in the lap of some of the most beautiful landscape in the world. My ineptitude with a camera goes mostly unnoticed because the scenery presents itself so well. I enjoy knowing that each time I present photos I’m “giving back” to the folks who are kind enough to read me.

3. Do you have any regrets? If so, what are they?

Of course I do. Don’t most of us? Do I have any regrets that make me want to go back and change the past? Not really. I wish I had been more mature and had more education before I had my son, but that would not have guaranteed giving him a better childhood. I could have worked harder at building bridges with my mother, but regrets won’t change what was. My mantra has always been “Everything happens exactly as it was meant to.” So no real regrets, no. I’m who and what and where I’m supposed to be in my life.

Shoot! Having said that (and I really do believe it) there is one thing I’d really like to change. I wish I’d never started smoking.

4. What has surprised you the most about blogging?

Mostly that people actually take the time to read what I write, like it and come back for more. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but never held it up to public scrutiny until I started blogging. It’s been very gratifying so far.

5. If you could have another profession, what would it be and why?

I’d love to be able to write well enough to make a living at it. I don’t know that that is attainable, but blogging is a nudge in the right direction and fulfills the need for right now. I enjoy pest control. It’s still as satisfying and fun today as it was when I started, so it’s not a burden at all for me to continue the way things are.

I’d give it all up today to be Mr. Fab’s hairdresser, though. That would be pretty cool.

So there you have it. Now you know me better than you did a while ago, and it’s my turn to perpetuate the fun. If you’d like me to interview you, here’s your chance:

Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
I’ll try to crawl into your skin and ask you the right five questions. I get to pick them.
You will update your weblog with the answers to the questions.
You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

This time-limited offer is available on a first come/first serve basis. I will take up to five bloggers who are ready to bare their souls. Or maybe just three. It depends on how much is piled on my plate tomorrow.

  4. I’m glad I found your blog. You’re giving us a very nice peek into life in Hawaii. It has always fascinated me, especially with lots of Filipinos there.
