Are you my Technorati favorite?

I never bothered much with Technorati when I was on blogspot. Every now and then someone would ask me to favorite them and tell me they had favorited me. I didn’t see any particular benefit in it, so that was pretty much the extent of my involvement. When I moved to my domain I had a lot of help, and the bloggers who helped me made suggestions for things I could or should add. So I ended up with a Technorati widget over there on my sidebar. Not terribly obvious, but once it was in place I became aware of it. Over the last month or so there’s been a lot of talk about Technorati on websites and blogs. Technorati as a measure of a blog’s popularity. Technorati as a social networking tool. The bottom line for me is that if Technorati is a tool to measure the importance of a blog, I am pond scum. Sad but true. Technorati doesn’t just happen … one has to want it and encourage it.

Hand in hand with that, Maki over at Dosh Dosh has decided to conduct an experiment. She believes that becoming one of Technorati’s Top 100 Favorited blogs is not only attainable but that it’s easy. She has devised the Ultimate Technorati Favorites Exchange and invited her readers to participate. Maki defines her purpose thusly: “The goal of this experiment is simple, to break into the Technorati Top 100 and determine the exposure and traffic benefits of being included in the Top 100 list.” Okay, that’s interesting I suppose, but to me, just recently beginning to look at the system, not something I’m particularly concerned aobut. A further statement, though, does intrigue me: “This favorites exchange experiment is to confront the vague notion of Technorati favorites and condense its benefits in terms of traffic. Perhaps a crude and narrow way to examine it but I see no other visible ways to analyze the value of being listed in the Top 100.” Now I like that. Not only does someone besides me recognize that there are things about Technorati that are vague, but she believes that clearing away someof the fog might reveal that it can be used to increase traffic. Nuff said! I’m on board.

I’ll need your help, of course. This is a ultimately all about social networking and you are my social network. If you’re reading my blog, chances are that you consider me something of a favorite. So could you go over there to the left sidebar and click on the Technorati icon down near the bottom and favorite me? And could you let me know that you’ve done that, please, so I can return the favor? That’s pretty easy, right? Now, if you’re interested in expanding your network beyond its present parameters, you’ll have to work at that a little bit. You can start by favoriting Dosh Dosh. Then, if you’d like to get acquainted with some new blogs and expand your own list of favorites even more, well, she’s got blogs lined up and waiting. You’ll find them at the end of her post. These are folks who are serious about helping Maki and themselves rank in that top 100, and you’re welcome to join them. Each of them has their own network among whom they are encouraging sharing, and many of their readers have additional blogs in their own networks. Expanding and overlapping circles of bloggers and readers. Makes it a little clearer how that previously mentioned vague notion can increase readership and your network. Do as little or as much as you want. If you’re interested in putting yourself in the top 100, you’ll spend some serious time and energy in getting there. If your goal is to increase your own personal traffic and gain some new readers, you can do that fairly easily.

I’ve got a lot of things going on in my life right now. I honestly don’t know how much I’ll be participating. But I’ve favorited Maki and I’m ready to start meeting her friends. It’s time to quit being pond scum. Join me if you like!
