Skeet's Stuff

I may be old, but …

In my interview a few days ago I was asked if I would ever leave Hawaii. I mentioned some things that I love about living here. It occurred to me today that there’s one thing I forgot to mention.

Pete2

Meet Pete. I stopped at the boat harbor today to take some pictures. You know: scenery, nature stuff, fish flitting just below the surface of the water, boats, rocks. Just stuff. I, um … got distracted.

Pete saw me walking along the dock, camera in hand, gave me that luscious smile and greeted me with “Aloha.” Sounded like an invitation to me, so I asked if he would mind if I took his picture. The smile got bigger and he said, “No problem, sistah.” I was prepared to snap a couple of shots there on the sidewalk with the smelly fish-gut dumpster in the background, but Pete dropped his shore bag and some gear he was carrying and walked over to pose against the rock wall that keeps folks on the path. Bless his heart, what an accommodating guy he is.

Pete works at Paradise Cove Luau, a tourist attraction here on the coast. He’s a fire knife dancer. Oh, yeah, I could see that. If you click on the Paradise Cove link you can find some photos of what he does, though I couldn’t pick him out of any of them. I guess he’s used to women stopping him and asking him for pictures. One of the things an entertainer has to put up with.

I met Pete at around eleven in the morning and the sun was blazing down. I had to fool with the contrast in the pictures because I didn’t want the shadows to keep you from seeing his amazing eyes. Forgive the slight fading of the colors. I thought it was worth it. You can see the originals (much larger, too) on my flikr page.

So, would I ever leave Hawaii? Maybe some day. Certainly not today. I have neighbors who work at Paradise Cove who are willing to share their generous employee discount. I haven’t been there for a few years and really think I should go check it out again. Very soon. Just to say aloha to my friend Pete, you know?
