Maili

You learn something every day. Well, I do, and I hope that’s always the way of it. I’ve passed the marker at Maili Beach Park many, many times over the last twelve years. I realized this weekend that I’ve never approached it. If I had, I would surely have seen the plaque set into the ground in front of it.

This is a land rich in legend and traditional lore. Ancient stories were preserved and passed on orally from generation to generation until the missionaries crafted an alphabet and a written Hawaiian language. I have numerous books that retell these old stories, but had never known this one that is undoubtedly revered as the telling of the origins of my own little community. I need to spend more time getting to know my neighborhood. I think I’ll start by figuring out which mountain is which.
