Updates on a spider and a heroic story
I’ve been watching our lady spider rebuilding her nest. You’ll recall that it had become something of a mess when I last reported on her activities. She rebuilt one of the stabilimenta shortly after that. When I went out the next day she had not started on the other crosspiece. I missed a day and when I returned, she was gone. Maybe the sloppy housekeeping was the first sign of senile dementia and she had a rapid decline into old age and death. Maybe a bird finally noticed her, sitting all plump and juicy outside my window. I thought it only right to let you know, since some of you had been following her progress.
Back in April I introduced you all to Pete. Y’all remember Pete, don’t you?
A few days after we first met him, we all took vicarious pride in him. Our Pete was in the right place at the right time and became a hero by rescuing some victims of a boat explosion. This morning I was discussing blogging with Daniel, who has been delivering my propane for over ten years. We discussed the things I blog about and I mentioned some of the local stories I’ve done, including the one about Pete. This coast is like a small town where everybody you meet knows or is related to someone that you already know. Turns out that one of the men Pete helped rescue is Daniel’s uncle. He was blown into the air by the force of the explosion that day and landed back first on the edge of the dock. Daniel reports that his uncle is home from the hospital. His back was broken and he is paralyzed, but has had some return of movement and sensation to one leg. The doctors have offered cautious hope that his improvement will continue.

Well, I do hope Daniel’s uncle gets better. If he has some sensation on one leg, perhaps physiotherapy can help..

We’re all hoping he’ll have a full recovery, Jenny. Nothing is certain yet, but that’s what hope is all about, isn’t it!

Daniel’s uncle is still in rehab, Pelf, and probably will be for quite some time. I hope he continues and doesn’t allow himself to get discouraged.

Anna Bella, you and I are of the same opinion.

I asked Daniel to tell his uncle that my readers would be thinking, praying and hoping for his recovery, Jules. See, I know you all well!

We all hope he’ll do well, Whim, and I know he appreciates the thoughts.

If only all towns and cities in the US were so friendly and caring and close knit. More recovery hopes headed that way.

Loretta, there are four separate community names on the coast, but it really is like one little town where everyone knows everyone. Very close-knit, very “family” feeling.
I’ll be passing everyone’s good wishes on to Daniel for his uncle.
