Stupidity trumps common sense

stuff 043

Groaaaaan! What was I thinking! Last week it was an A & W Root Beer float, this week it’s Crispy Gau Gee from one of the local Asian drive-ins. I had meant to pick some up while my son was here because we always enjoyed sharing them. Somehow we never got around to it during his visit, but they’ve stayed in the back of my mind. Yesterday I parked right in front of the drive-in when I stopped to check my maibox and the pull was just too great. So I ordered my crispy gau gee, went next door to pick up my mail, then sat and sorted my mail while I waited for my order. I ate three of them when I got home, and the remainder are in the fridge calling out to me. Unfortunatley, that little taste of heaven has sent me into a full-on flare of tummy trouble and I’m feeling much too miserable to eat the rest. I need a vacation from my lousy digestion. I wonder if I should look at some Las Vegas Luxury Condos and plan a little getaway. Do you think that would help?

For those of you who don’t know, I can’t digest fats. At all. I’m “allowed” to have a miniscule portion of dairy each day, but milk is full of fat and it’s easy to get too much. I can handle a single slice of cheese on a sandwich as long as I use fat-free mayo, but ice cream is never on my list. My poor digestion has not yet recovered from last week’s root beer float assault, so having the gau gee yesterday was a really bad decision. Gau gee are little balls of seasoned pork, wrapped in pastry and deep-fried. You might say that there’s a conflict of interest between my culinary tastes and my ability to digest.

My to-go order was handed to me in a paper bag, which had to be placed inside of a plastic bag because it immediately became saturated with grease. Exactly how smart would one need to be to know that anything that came out of that bag should not be consumed by man or beast? I’m not lacking in knowledge when it comes to my health, but my impulse control seems to be needing a tune-up.

I have some leftovers. If I’m smart I’ll ask the neighbors how they feel about Asian appetizers to kick off their dinner tonight. Let’s just hope I don’t get to feeling better between now and then. The decision is easy right now. When the belly ache goes away my judgement may falter again.

  1. Skeet - I knew your blog would eventually make me miss Hawaii. I lived there from ‘91 to ‘93 (or ‘94.)

My dad was Navy stationed at Pearl. We lived at Iroquois Point. I was in eighth grade when we left.

I miss the food. I miss the ocean. I miss the warm people.

I don’t know if I want to live there again, but I will always be home sick for Eva Beach every winter.

  2. Tina, Iroquois Point is now private housing. Saturation marketing campaign for the easy life: http://www.drivehappyhome.com/
You can’t turn on the TV without seeing happy families living as if in a resort.

As much as I love it here and know that I never want to leave, I still find myself humming “Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans” from time to time, remembering the taste of a special food, having my memory tickled by a scent or a sound. Homesickness is a funny thing. Creeps right up on you and makes your knees buckle.

I’ve inspected most of the housing in Iroquois Point, by the way. It was a job that primarily serviced a DOD hoising contract that brought me to Hawaii.

  3. That bites that you can’t have much dairy food. I couldn’t imagine going without. ;_; Those gau gee look absolutely delicious but are, surprisingly enough, making me crave meat empandas, hell, even pumpkin ones XD You’re evil!

    Feel better soon! ^_^

  4. I’m sorry you felt bad after eating something your craved for.

I’m not allowed much protein…and yep…I make problems for myself too.

  5. Now I’m craving crispy gau gee & I’ve never had it before, even after hearing the story, so I must be even more stupid. Feel better!

  6. Wow. I’m floored by that web site. They were very nice houses.

    I’ve heard I wouldn’t recognizes Eva Beach.

    *sigh* You can’t go home.

  7. The gau gee really were delicious, Joana. sometimes you just have to satisfy a craving even if you know the results will be disasterous. did you get your empanadas?

  8. Laane, I’m pretty strict about sticking to my diet most of the time, but every now and then I go crazy for a day or a week. The price is steep, but if you’re on a restricted diet too I’m guessing you already know that.

  9. I’m feeling better, Sarakastic, and thinking that the gau gee were worth it, lol! :D

  10. Tina, you probably wouldn’t recognize Fort Weaver Road for sure. It’s lined with hundreds of new homes, each looking much like the other, in a whole slew of new developments. Ewa Beach isn’t “country” any more!
