A Boston Terrier story

My parents bought the house I was to grow up in when I was in first grade. It was in a brand new subdivision with very few homes completed. There were maybe a dozen neighbors on the block that first year, a long block that eventually had about fifty homes. New friends were few and far between, but we soon had neighbors right next door. They were a young couple, and their infant son and toddler daughter were like real live dolls to me. I spent a lot of time “helping” Miss Linda tend house and children. The final member of the household was probably named Pudding, but we called her Puddin. She was an adorable Boston Terrier and quickly won my heart. Boston Terriers are those cute little black and white dogs with protruding eyes and pug noses, just the right size for a toddler, her infant brother and their six-year-old pal. They’re very friendly and family-oriented dogs, a perfect choice for such a household. Puddin was “our” dog as much as the neighbors, until a year or so later when we adopted a pound pup of our own. I remember one rainy day when my sister and I were suffering from cabin fever. As we gazed out the streaming window of our bedroom we saw Puddin trot out into her yard to relieve herself. We must have recently watched the old Gene Kelly movie, because we opened the window and began to sing to our four-legged neighbor. “Puddin in the rain. It’s Puddin in the rain …” That was almost fifty years ago, but I still think of that song whenever I see a Boston Terrier.

Many years later my mother began raising Pekingnese dogs, so I became acquainted with the special care needed for dogs with pug noses and protruding eyes. If you have a Boston Terrier or are considering getting one, you might want to check out this Boston Terriers Dog Guide Article which will help you understand their special needs. They’re relatively low-maintenance as dogs go. They have short coats that only require minimal grooming, and they don’t need a rigorous exercise routine. They’re very social and do best in families that won’t be leaving them alone on a daily basis. Every breed is different and it’s a good idea to know some basics of terrier care if you’re going to have one as a member of your own family. Every dog deserves the best possible care, and a song of their own, too.

“Puddin in the rain, it’s Puddin in the rain …”

  1. Firstly, you have a beautiful blog.

Secondly, Boston Terriers are a terrific breed, full of life and character, and I truly appreciate that you also pointed out their special needs. Like Jack Russell (my breed of choice) they are a terrier, and are not for everybody. Anybody considering a terrier needs to realize they are NOT a calm dog that sits around calnly. They are little Tazmanian devils that require lots of time and care.

  2. I have never had the pleasure of owing a Boston but love the look of the breed, I have had boxers for many years, another pug nosed breed, and they do have special needs. Nice post.
