Chuck, I love reel mowers! They’re not the best choice for a large lawn, but I certainly like them better than gas mowers. Right now I have a little 10 X 10 lawn (the rest of my yard is xeriscaped with gravel) so I don’t even have a lawnmower. I use clippers.

I’ve always have held reel mowers in special regard as they are manufactured in my hometown (which only has 15,000 people, but is the only US manufacturer of reel mowers).

However, after trying to use one on my great-grandmothers’ 2-acre lawn (she owned about 300 acres, but only about 2 of it was lawn — the rest was woods and farmland), I decided that I’ll just hold them dear in my mind and in practice will use the power mower…
