Good news in Hawaii!
It’s winter time and Christmas is officially on its way to Hawaii! How can we tell? Well, there’s snow on the mountain tops on the Big Island, for a start. Kinda messy up above the clouds right now, but people will be going anyway, to get a little taste of some winter weather. Christmas trees are arriving in the islands almost daily. There was an Ag Department scare because some alien wasps were found in an early shipment, but we are assured that inspections are going smoothly and trees will be avialable for all of us. A tree-lighting ceremony and parade will officially open this year’s Honolulu City Lights, an ongoing extravaganza that will put everyone in a holiday mood. And it goes without saying, if it’s winter in Hawaii: surf’s up!

I would assume that becuase everything has to be shipped from the mainland, things like trees and what not would be outrageous expensive. Do many people in Hawaii use artificial trees to overcome that?

You’d be right, bluepaintred! Last year I was NOT in a holiday mood early enough. I tried to find a tree the second week of December and there were very few to choose from. They were scraggly leftovers and the prices started at $65.00. I’m hoping the Ag Dept. Will have enough trees cleared by this weekend for it not to be a mad crush to get one. A lot of folks either won’t have one at all or will go for an artificial one. I figure if it’s not real it’s not a Christmas tree, but to each his own. I’m hoping to get a small, tabletop one (three feet at most) for $35-40 as I have in years past.

How cool is that to have both tropical and winter weather at the same time.

I’ve heard it said, Dragonfly, that the Big Island is one of the few places in the world where you can play in mountaintop snow and swim in the ocean on the same day. The year-round average ocean temp is about 80 degrees F, regardless of what’s going on at high altitude.
