Fine Wine for Christmas

Wine Club

Do you have a wine-lover your holiday gift list? Silly question, because of course you do. I’ve found a gift that I know will be very much appreciated by anyone who loves fine wine. Gold Medal Wine Club allows you to select a gift membership from among several different wine clubs depending on the taste and preferece of the recipients and the budget you set for your gifts. I received a Gold Series gift, which features monthly, semi-monthly or quarterly selections from small-production boutique wineries in California. My 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2004 Merlot are estate-grown wines from Madrona Winery, a family-owned vineyard in the Sierra foothills. Each has garnered an impressive collection of awards from several prestigious wine competitions. I don’t have an educated palate where wines are concerned, but that hasn’t kept me from enjoying the successive layers of rich flavor from the Cabernet Suvignon or the bold fruitiness of the Merlot which positively explodes in the mouth.

Each wine shipment is accompanied by The Wine Press, a newsletter that provides a history of the vintners and their vineyard. Reading the story of the Bush family and their winery while sipping their fine wine adds a delightful new level to the experience. The newsletter also contains recipes (I’m saving some of the Merlot for the Madrona Marinara Sauce!) and some fun facts about wines. Did you know that Cream of Tartar, a kitchen staple I’ve used for years, is made from argol, the crystals that cling to the inside of a fermentation vat? Call me a geek if you will, but I love knowing things like that! Before you stoop to the name-calling, though, check out Gold Medal Wine Club. There’s still time to arrange shipment of your gift for Christmas!
