Surfing is finally an official high school sport in Hawaii
Hawaii loves high school sports. We’re fanatical in our support of football, baseball, basketball, volleyball - all of the sports supported by high school programs around the country. Now, finally we’ll be able to support surfing students as well. It’s been a long time coming, but surfers in island high schools are celebrating this week as they prepare for the first offically sanctioned high school surf meet. The program was approved four years ago, but has been tied up in red tape until now. New York, South Carolina, Florida and California already have high school surf programs in place, well ahead of the state where the sport was born. Two of the first-season meets will be held right here on my Waianae Coast. You know I’ll be there to cheer for these skillful athletes who are finally getting their day in the sun!

Considering how Hawaii schools let out early on Wednesdays, a practice which was initially designed to allow kids to surf without being truant, this has been a long time coming. Excellent news!

After being a part of surfing in California and covering other schools in Florida and South Carolina it’s good to hear Hawaii finally getting a chance to give the high schools and the kids some exposure. Can’t wait to hear the results!

I never noticed the Wednesday thing, Kate. I’ll have to watch & see if they do it here on the Coast. Our kids go year-round so their schedule is a little different from the schools that take summer vacation. I know we do have a lot of kids that skip out so they can surf, so maybe wanting to qualify for the teams will help cut back on htat. L)

I find it strange that Hawaii wasn’t the first state to embrace surfing as a school sport, Brad, but I’m very glad they’re doing it now. Major excitement as we wait for the first meets!
