Lance is getting uppity
Lance sleeps with me. That’s cool. We both enjoy the companionship. His place is up against the back of my legs (I sleep on my right side.) Sometimes, if he’s feeling playful or affectionate, he’ll come up to my pillow when we first go to bed. He’ll bump his head agaist mine and we’ll play the “rub faces” game for a few minutes, then he’ll wander back to “his end’ of the bed and settle in. I’m very comfortable sharing my personal space with the beagle, but I do have my limits. Over the last few days he’s decided that my neck roll pillow is his favorite cuddle toy. I keep it on the couch and stick it behind my neck whenever I’m sitting there. Here’s the thing: he drools. In addition to that, he smells like a dog. Not a nasty, smelly dog - he gets bathed regularly - but a dog, nonetheless. His natural aroma is not strong enough that I notice it transferring to my beddign, but I don’t want his slobber and doggy smell in my hair and invading my nostrils. I’ve taken the pillow away from him several times lately. This morning I came into the living room and saw him cuddled up against the pillow. I put on my best mom-voice and said “Are you usurping my pillow again?” He rolled one eye towards me, reached out a paw and pulled the pillow just a little closer, leaving the paw possessively draped across the forbidden item. Why do I feel like this is a battle I’m not going to win?

I’ve never experienced this with a dog, but I can tell you that cats are far, far more possessive of soft, cushy things. When I still let them sleep in bed with me, I was lucky if I got any of the pillows, a corner of the comforter, or even a 1/4 of the bed! When I kicked them out of the bedroom for the last time (boyfriend has sinus issues), they commandeered my favorite throw on the couch and will not release it. I gave up.
Pets are so funny, aren’t they?

Awww…I’m such a sap, I’d probably either let him keep it, or buy him one of his own. Haha.

Awww, it smells like mommy so think of it as him giving you a hug when you’re not around. Oh yeah and get a new roll for yourself, I think the beagle might win this round! LOL

Aww… yeah, it sounds like he has already won. LOL My husband, who never liked dogs before knowing me, loves our dog so much that he has taken to letting him sleep in the bed with us too. Heaven forbid I say he needs to sleep in his own bed (right beside ours). He act like I’m the cruelest doggie mommy ever when I say that.

I agree….looks like Lance has won. I believe it is time that you get yourself a new roll pillow. Lance is so cute (I’m a major dog lover) and beagles are the cutest. I hope Lance is doing better, he looks like he is.

Lance doesn’t usually “steal” my property, Sammy. That’s why it is so strange he’s decided he loves my pillow. {{{shrug}}} What’s a mom to do?

I gave up on the neck pillow, Lee. I’ll get me a new one soon and try to remember to put it up on a shelf when I’m not using it. The old one no longer belongs to me.

I gave up, Em. The old pillow belongs to Lance now and I’ll get a new one soon for my exclusive use.

Yep, Corrin - reclaiming my pillow was a losing battle so I gave up & let Lance have it.

Of course the beagle won, Anele. That was a foregone conclusion, wasn’t it?!

Are you going to lose your doggie battle too, Laurie? Why should he sleep in his own bed when you have extra space in yours?

I need to do an update post about Lance, Donna, but yes, he’s doing better. Probably from the magical healing powers of “his” pillow, lol!
