Grey day

weather radar 4-27-09

It’s dark and dreary today. We had a heavy storm overnight and are now enjoying a respite. I’ve just looked at the local weather radar and see that the bigger part of the storm system is still headed our way. (I’m close to Ennis on the map above. The storm is southwest of us and moving in a northeasterly direction.)

Muddy ruts

We’re so far out in the country that I can’t get any cell phone reception. I can see that I have voicemail messages waiting, but when I try to access them I get the same message every time - “searching for signal.” Since I’m still job-hunting I need to be able to respond to messages promptly, so I took my life in my hands this morning and went for a drive, heading in the direction of the nearest cell tower. I thought for a few minutes that I wouldn’t be able to get out of the driveway. It was hardpack dirt yesterday. Today it’s soup. I had to do some fancy maneuvering to get up the slope to the gravel part of the driveway, but had clear sailing after that.

Kaufman County storm 001

About fifteen minutes away from the house I pulled over to the side of the road and called my voicemail again. I had three messages, but, alas - none was a job offer. I’ve applied for over thirty jobs in the last two weeks and had eight face-to-face interviews, but the search goes on. Maybe this week. Maybe after the storm clouds blow away they’ll leave their silver lining behind.

  1. Hang in there Skeet. I’m sure something grand will be coming your way in no time!

  2. I wondered if you dropped off the planet! I miss your posts! Hang in there Skeet, you’re certainly in the same boat with many people. It’s an unfortunate sign of the times. But keep plugging away, the right thing will come along! Aloha!

  3. Finally a post from U!! I was beginning to think I needed to send out an APB for my puter friend. Alas! she has been found on her own accord. What a relief!

Wishing you success on your job hunting!

  4. Glad to see you haven’t disappeared on us.

On the voice mail issue, let my awful job help you out here. You can pick up your messages from another phone, like the land line, if need be. All you have to do is dial your number, when the voice mail message comes on interrupt it by hitting the * (star) key. It will ask for your password, then off you go to your inbox. If that doesn’t work, call your carrier. It might be different for your carrier than the one I take calls for.

Good luck with the job hunt.

  5. It is always darkest before dawn. I hope you will land a job soon. All the best with the new place.

  6. Thanks, Lee! The hunt goes on …

  7. Thanks, Anele. So many places are laying off. I’m getting tired of hearing “… but we’ll be happy to keep your application on file.” Still, I know something will break soon … it just has to!

  8. Aw, thanks Nellie! Your words are like a big old hug that fits just right!

  9. Thanks for the kind words and well-wishes, Tina. My cousin had the same advice on the voice mail messages & it worked!

  10. Aw, thanks, Imran! You know, I have a roof over my head and I eat every day, so life is actually pretty good!
