Self Portrait Sunday for May 10, 2009
The plan was to spend the day having a hospital room picnic at my aunt’s bedside. She had surgery last Tuesday and a few complications afterwards. She’s feeling pretty good today and hoping to be released soon. I woke with a bit of a fever this morning, along with nausea and a splitting headache. I had a heat exhaustion episode while working in the yard yesterday, so that’s probably all that’s wrong with me. It didn’t seem prudent to expose Aunt Martha to anything, though, so I’ve stayed home “just in case.” Good day to catch up on laundry, webbby stuff and other chores. I’ll be getting a call from the kid sometime later today. He’ll wish me a Happy Mother’s Day and tell me that he’ll be mailing something special to me soon (his procrastination is one way you can tell he’s my son.) I’ve got numerous dogs and cats to keep me company while I stay busy and wait for my call. Hope you’re all having a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Self Portrait Sunday for May 3, 2009
Yay me! I remembered Self Portrait Sunday while it’s still Sunday! I got up this morning & got dressed, hoping to meet up sometime today with my sister. Alas, she had to work, so I was all dressed up with no place to go. Just as well, because I needed a day to rest and recoup. I’ve been spending every day on the job hunt and that’s very wearing on body, mind and soul. I’m feeling rested and refreshed after a day of lazing around though, so I’ll be raring to go in the morning. Maybe tomorrow will be the day, hm?

Grey day
It’s dark and dreary today. We had a heavy storm overnight and are now enjoying a respite. I’ve just looked at the local weather radar and see that the bigger part of the storm system is still headed our way. (I’m close to Ennis on the map above. The storm is southwest of us and moving in a northeasterly direction.)
We’re so far out in the country that I can’t get any cell phone reception. I can see that I have voicemail messages waiting, but when I try to access them I get the same message every time - “searching for signal.” Since I’m still job-hunting I need to be able to respond to messages promptly, so I took my life in my hands this morning and went for a drive, heading in the direction of the nearest cell tower. I thought for a few minutes that I wouldn’t be able to get out of the driveway. It was hardpack dirt yesterday. Today it’s soup. I had to do some fancy maneuvering to get up the slope to the gravel part of the driveway, but had clear sailing after that.
About fifteen minutes away from the house I pulled over to the side of the road and called my voicemail again. I had three messages, but, alas - none was a job offer. I’ve applied for over thirty jobs in the last two weeks and had eight face-to-face interviews, but the search goes on. Maybe this week. Maybe after the storm clouds blow away they’ll leave their silver lining behind.

Self Portrait Sunday for March 29, 2009
Not the greatest picture, but I wanted to show off my great-niece, Lily. Today was the second time I’ve been with her. The first time she wanted nothing to do with me. Today she let me feed her then decided I was okay for lap time. She doesn’t take well to strangers, so I’m happy with the progress. We’re getting there!

Self Portrait Sunday for March 22, 2009
Yes, I’m as tired as I look. I was burning leaves until the sun went down. I took my photo right after I came in, which was right before I took a nice long shower. I’m feeling refreshed and a lot less gritty and smokey, but no less tired. I’m a little wired up, though, so maybe I’ll watch some TV before I go to bed. Is there anything on at (checking clock) 9:30 on a Sunday night? I miss Iron Chef, but cousin Kim doesn’t get cable channels. She had a dish & realized she was rarely watching anything other than networks so she had the service cancelled. Missing my regular TV shows is a small price to pay, considering the level of hospitality she’s offered, so I don’t mind doing without it for a while. I sold my TV a few days before I moved. I’ll probably get a new plasma screen set for the new place, one that will go on the wall or maybe on a nice plasma mount. Have to get the house sold first and then buy a new one, of course, but I’ll be buying quite a few new things for my home once everything settles down. Someday soon, I hope!
Gah! Must be tirder than I thought. I hit “publish” before reminding you to visit all of the Self Portrait Sunday folks over at Cass’s place!

Score one for the good guys
I couldn’t resist taking a picture of this car outside the trade show we went to last week. I spent a few minutes talking with one of the officers who was present. He said a number of seized vehicles are being used by the police department. There are still plenty of other vehicles left over though, so they hold auctions regularly. I told him I might be interested in looking to their auctions as a souce for another vehicle some time down the road, as long as they inspect it thoroughly and remove all of the previous owner’s belongings first.

Self Portrait Sunday for March 15, 2009
Yep, it’s a little colder in Texas than it was in Hawaii. I’ve been wearing my “uniform” every time I step outdoors: I found the coat at a thrift store & Cousin Kim loaned me the hat and gloves. I’ve got long johns under my jeans but you’ll have to take my word for that. It was warm when I got here last week, but a storm blew in a few days later & I’ve been cold ever since. The rain stopped yesterday, so I’m hoping it will warm up soon & we’ll be on our way to spring.
My furniture and personal belongings haven’t left Hawaii yet and there’s some doubt that they ever will. I’m hoping I will find a way to get everything here. If not I’ll have to replace all of my clothes, kitchen items, office furniture, tools, hardware … everything. Not a happy prospect, so I’m trying hard not to think about it right now.
I don’t see a new Self Portrait Sunday post today at Midlife Musings, but that’s okay. Cass has a bunch on her plate these days, but Sunday isn’t over yet, so she might post in a bit. If she doesn’t, that’s okay, too. I’ve missed a whole string of self portraits lately and that’s just the way life is sometimes. We’ll live.

Self Portrait Sunday for March 8, 2008
Do I look any different? I’m a new person, one of that peculiar species identified as “Texan” (once again.) I arrived here on Friday and am getting settled in at my cousin’s home while I shop for a new home and await the arrival of my furniture, car and other goodies. The last few weeks were grueling and the trip itself less than comfortable, but Lance and I are ready to start building our new life. Checking in on the Self Portrait Sunday fun seems as good a place to start as any.

Self Portrait Sunday for February 8, 2009
I’ve spent ten hours today cleaning up messes. Cousin Todd put “popcorn” on the ceilings of the guest room, my room and the master bath this morning. We had taped of margins and put plastic sheeting all over the place before he started, but the stuff gets everywhere. He’s also been doing some texturing in my room and bathroom, so sheetrock mud was also splattered around. I got everything as clean as I could and then started on the floor in the guest bath, which had spatters of paint, adhesives, wax, wood stain & a few mystery stains as well (since it’s a bathroom I don’t really want to think too much about those.) Todd is going fishing tomorrow, so I’m hoping to get my room & bathroom painted while he’s out, then work on some other clean-up work related to closing down my business. I’m so looking forward to all of this being done so I can get on with my life. I hope to be telling you about a new business in the near future, but since nothing is solid yet it would be premature to tell you much about it right now. I can tell you that it’s not a Subway franchise, though that’s an attractive idea and a business I wouldn’t mind being involved in.
Ten p.m. I’m hoping to get in another hour or so of cleaning & stuff before I go to bed. I might squeeze in a visit with the other Self Portrait Sunday participants, too, but there’s much to do so that might have to wait until tomorrow. Right now I think I’ll go see if I can get popcorn and mud off of the electrical outlets without shutting off the power or frying myself.

Self Portrait Sunday for January 25, 2009
I’ve had a garage sale again this weekend - the third weekend in a row. Tired of that already, but I’ll do it again next weekend too (probably) because I’ve managed to get rid of a substantial portion of my clutter and I’ve made a few bucks each weeknd. It was slow today, though, so I was able to get some painting done between customers. I painted three sides of the pickets for the deck along the left side of the house - the part of the deck that extends into Lance’s yard. I’ll try to paint the side facing the deck tomorrow. Right now I Have a different priority - I need to go visit the other Self Portrait Sunday participants.
That’s what I did today - just the white pickets, not the gray deck and rails. Those will be painted after I’m through with all the pickets.
This is tomorrow’s assignment. I’m hoping to turn the corner and start working my way across the front of the house.
